DayZ Dedicated Server on Windows

How the Windows DayZ dedicated server is laid out, where BattlEye RCon config sits, and what CFTools Architect installs for you.

Windows is the boring, supported place to run a DayZ dedicated server. The public branch app is 223350. Architect installs the requirements on Windows for you. That is the whole reason a lot of communities never learn where the Visual C++ runtime came from, and it is fine that they do not, until they move the files by hand and the process starts and then immediately does not.

The dedicated server is not the game client with a checkbox. Do not host from the same folder you play in. Give the server its own directory, its own Steam update, and its own firewall rules. The executable you care about is the server binary, and next to it, after the first real boot, BattlEye will have a home. BEServer_x64.cfg is the RCon file. It is often under a profiles folder named profiles, config, or SC, beside BEServer_x64.dll. There is no single path Bohemia promises. Look where the dll landed.

serverDZ.cfg is the file players feel: hostname, passwords, slots, voice, time acceleration, and whether the server is advertised. The mission is selected there too. A hostname that says Livonia while the mission is Chernarus is a lie the map filter will repeat, because the public list reports the map token, not your Discord banner. Get the ports open before you debug "invisible server" as a config typo. It is usually the firewall.

Mods on Windows are folders starting with @, loaded with -mod=. The Workshop download and the server folder are not the same thing until something copies them. CFTools Architect tracks DayZ Workshop mods and treats @ folders as mods. If you are doing it by hand, the mod install guide is the sequence. Do not rename the folder to look pretty. The @ prefix is how the tooling knows it is a mod.

RCon is not in serverDZ.cfg. It is RConPassword, RConPort, and RestrictRCon in the BattlEye cfg. Password rules are strict: short, no spaces, no special symbols, 32 characters maximum. RestrictRCon 1 is the default that blocks kicks, bans, and shutdowns. Set it to 0 or CFTools Cloud can connect and still not be allowed to do the thing you bought it for. Cloud is the game server management product. Architect is the Windows host. You can run one without the other. Most communities that are past the first month run both, because file updates and live kicks are different jobs.

Backups on Windows are boring and that is the point. Copy the persistence data, the mission, and the cfg on a schedule that is not "when someone remembers." A wipe is a choice. A disk failure is not. The wipe guide is about telling players which one happened. The hive guide is about which folder actually holds their tents.

If the server is up and the roster can see it, you are done with the Windows-specific part. Everything after that — bans, restarts, who may send a global message — is operations, and it belongs in the RCon manuals rather than in another desktop shortcut on the host.

Windows is fine if you treat it like a server

A desktop Windows install with sleep enabled is not a dedicated server. Disable sleep, disable the "helpful" reboot window during your peak, and decide who else can remote in. The admin password to that machine is more powerful than RCon. Fewer people should have it. CFTools Cloud is how everyone else kicks and restarts without that password. CFTools Architect is how you avoid owning Windows as a hobby at all. If you are staying on your own box, write the boot command in a scheduled task that runs at start, and test it by rebooting while you watch, once, before strangers depend on it.

Paths matter. The cfg you edited in a text editor must be the cfg next to the binary the task launches. People keep a copy in Documents from a tutorial and wonder why the hostname never changes on the server list. Search for serverDZ.cfg and for BEServer_x64.cfg after install and delete the decoys. One profiles directory per instance. Two servers in one profile will trade corruption.

Updates from Windows itself belong in a window you chose, the same way mod updates do. An automatic 2 a.m. reboot that collides with your restart clock looks like a crash loop on the player chart. Set active hours or patch manually. Then join from outside: a phone hotspot is enough to prove the firewall rule is not "works on the LAN." The community roster is full of servers that passed the LAN test and failed the internet.

Antivirus will quarantine BattlEye or a mod DLL on the worst day. Exclude the server directory on purpose, and do not exclude your whole disk to be lazy. After you add a Workshop item, check that the @ folder is still there and still in -mod=. Then confirm the modded flag and the map token on your public page. Windows file locks during a copy are a common reason a mod folder is half-written. Stop the process, copy, start. A live copy is not a procedure. It is a crash.

Questions

Does CFTools Architect install Windows dependencies?

Yes. On Windows, Architect installs the requirements for the DayZ dedicated server. On Linux it does not.

Where is BEServer_x64.cfg?

Next to BEServer_x64.dll, commonly under the profiles, config, or SC folder. The path is not fixed by Bohemia.

Can I host from my playing install?

Do not. The dedicated server is app 223350. The client is app 221100. Keep them apart.
